Name: Rita

Father’s name: Mukendi

Mother’s name: Mushiya

Date and place of birth: Lubumbashi, 04.09.2001

Rita was born in a family of 6 children. She is the firstborn. She has 3 little brothers and 2 little sisters.

Rita left her house because she went to stay at her aunt’s place for vacation, and this is when all issues of witchcraft accusations started. When she went back to her family, her parents took her to church to determine if all her accusations were true. Unfortunately, at the church, she was submitted on an intensive session of being hit with a rope so that she can admit that she was a witch. Rita accepted the accusation so that they could stop hitting her. Rita was unhappy after this because she knew that the allegations were false and that the abuse she had felt from her family and community was unfair and hurtful. She decided to run away and find a hiding place in the market.

Rita was among the first group in the transit house for girls in June 2014 when she was 13 years old. After spending eight months in the transit house, when we were negotiating with her family, she ran away from the transit house because she did not want to go back to her family. With the bigger girls’ bad influence on the street, she refused to come back to the transit house. Rita decided to quit visiting the transit house entirely, and she was engaged in prostitution and got pregnant. Her baby’s name is Junior Kabasele; he is 9 months old.
